In order to accommodate diverse types of performances, a variable acoustic system was introduced in the perimeter of the auditorium as well as the stage area of the concert hall.
Forty-eight feet above the stage floats a double-curved ceiling reflector, which houses and carefully disguises most of the technical lighting, rigging and sound support equipment. All wall and ceiling reflectors have been constructed to meet specific density requirements, and their surface articulation assists in deflecting sound. Between the sails, variable acoustic curtains allow for tuning the room to better accommodate performances that include amplified sound. Soloists, orchestras, and chamber groups are increasingly experimenting with visual media, lighting, and movement, and the hall has been carefully designed to facilitate these more theatrical types of musical presentations. In addition, there was a strong desire to make an informal space that would break down the real and implied barriers that separate audiences and performers in so many halls.
Visitors to the Bing Concert Hall will pass through a glass-enclosed foyer that will include space for talks and educational programs. Stanford officials plan to have a variety of artists use the concert hall, including student groups, the Department of Music and visiting artists presented by Stanford Lively Arts. Season subscriptions for the hall will go on sale this spring. At this point, Lively Arts concerts scheduled to take place in the new venue after the grand opening include performances by the cellist Yo-Yo Ma, the pianists Emanuel Ax and Jon Nakamatsu, and the percussionist Glenn Kotche.
The natural acoustics of the hall is in a large part determined by its interior geometry. Interior materials of the hall were selected carefully to optimize sound characteristics.

At Last, a Place to Play
Even better, there are no right angles anywhere inside the hall. Every component of the architecture flows like a stream, in wavelike fashion, throughout the space. The acoustics took priority, and everything else was built around the acoustics. In the bigger picture, the idea is to ensure that every Stanford student has access to and appreciates the arts. Even the dressing rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows that face the landscaping outside.
In order to accommodate diverse types of performances, a variable acoustic system was introduced in the perimeter of the auditorium as well as the stage area of the concert hall.
Architecture and landscape create an integrated series of gathering spaces to the north, west and south, fully engaging the setting. The building is porous on these sides, maximizing its connection to the outdoors and to campus circulation. On the south, a terrace is designed to accommodate event functions. On the north, a more intimate terrace for performers overlooks a generous clearing preserved for large outdoor events. In the west, a spacious forecourt plaza invites patrons to the entry portico and into the lobby. A transitional space between the lush planted surroundings and the inward-focused concert hall, the lobby provides both physical and visual porosity to the exterior and offers a variety of possibilities for both formal and informal pre- and post-performance gatherings. Daylight fills the lobby from all sides, and light wells strategically placed around the drum and the 19-foot-high glass and aluminum curtain wall blur the distinction between inside and out.
